    Hello,

It would be grateful if you could answer the question.

When setting vCPU on a virtual machine, generally two items below are specified:

    1)    the number of virtual socket (= vCPU)

    2)    the number of core per socket

As a best practice for Delphix server setting, assuming that we chose 8vCPU (8 virtual sockets), how many core should we choose or do you recommend setting per socket?

Also, do you have any recommended specs for the cores(e.g. Intel Xeon, clock(Ghz))? If 10VDBs are running with 4vCPU, what would be the best practice for the hardware structure? Any specific choice of CPU core type?

    Thank you very much,

    Yasu

    Hi Yasu,

When setting vCPU on a virtual machine, generally two items below are specified:

    1)    the number of virtual socket (= vCPU)

    2)    the number of core per socket

     - Actually these are set at the ESX level and are determined by the hardware used for the ESX server. Together these values are used to determine the number of available vCPUs. When creating a guest VM on an ESX server you can only specify the number of vCPUs.

As a best practice for Delphix server setting, assuming that we chose 8vCPU (8 virtual sockets), how many core should we choose or do you recommend setting per socket?

    - As per above when creating a guest VM on an ESX server we only have the option of setting the number of vCPUs for that guest VM.

Also, do you have any recommended specs for the cores(e.g. Intel Xeon, clock(Ghz))?

    - From my knowledge we don’t have any recommendations for these specifications as most customers will have ESX servers and Delphix is able to be installed and function without issues. However we have contacted our Presales and professional services folks to see if they have any recommendations. If they do we’ll add another comment.

If 10VDBs are running with 4vCPU, what would be the best practice for the hardware structure?

    - I am not sure of the question as the Delphix Best Practice is to have 8vCPUs. However, depending on the load on the Virtual Databases etc., we may need to move some VDBs to another Delphix Engines for performance as many factors could be at play.

Any specific choice of CPU core type?

    - As per a previous question on recommendations, at this time we don’t have any recommendations as we want to be able to fit into any ESX/VMware environment etc.

    Cheers,
    Dave G.
